So as the time gets closer to buying my new car, the more I am trying to solidify my decision. Most of my friends will tell you I decide on a new car I want every day and then default back to the same few. Anyways last weekend I looked at the WRX, Outback, and Golf Sportwagen, and to be honestI didn’t like any of them. I am currently leaning the most towards the Toyota 4Runner because it makes the most sense as far as what I want in a vehicle. Yes the gas milage sucks, but I’m leaning towards the long term durability instead because My family, and myself have had so many.

But.... I did think of a way to battle the fuel milage. EcoDiesel Grand Cherokee. Problem 1, too expensive new, so I’d have to go used, and problem 2, they are not that easy to find used.

Kinja'd!!!

So my question is, what does Oppo know about the reliability and the performance of these new Diesel jeeps ? Because I know all the in’s and out’s of 4.0L mill in the 4Runners but I don’t know much about these Jeeps.

I feel like they're as reliable as can be expected from Jeep. I’m not sure how many generations in they are but I think i read a piece on some of them having cam gear failure. IIRC. Something that could be parsed out after a few model years.

The biggest problem that you’ll have with them is the emmissions system. They need to be driven regularly for extended periods (>30 min) at highway speeds. This gets them good and hot and keeps everything clean.

If you fart around in slow moving traffic with extended idling, you’re gonna have problems.

Also, oil changes are expensive.

Edmunds did a long term test of a Ram truck with the same engine. Read that for some enlightenment.

I do work for a Chrysler dealer....I’ve seen 2 in the last month getting new replacement engines due to some issue with the bottom end. One was a Grand Cherokee with under 10k and one a Ram with under 15k. I forget the exact issue, but something with the crankshaft getting loose and grenading the thing. I’d avoid anything with this powerplant.

Well I have plenty of highway driving in my daily routine

Diesel master Gale Banks likes them. He sells a crate version of the motor to put into ... Well, anything. That said, I’ve heard the first of these have had some issues. Even if the motor is reliable, it’s still installed in a FCA product. While I’m a big fan of the design of many FCA products, they aren’t exactly a paragon of reliability. If your ultimate goal is long term reliability, I’d look elsewhere.

08-09 OBW with the 2.5i. New GSW and trade it in two years. Stay away from FCA.

Dunno that I'd avoid them altogether. They're fairly unique. But I'd negotiate a hefty warranty as part of a deal if possible.

Yeah at the end of the day, FCA != reliability

Yeah I mean it seems like a cool engine but the reliability of any FCA product in general is a problem

I just don't want to rely on a warranty, I drive a fair bit, yes I can work from home some days, but there are also days where I will drive 3 - 4 hours , at bare minimum I spend about an hour and a half in the car if I only go to work and home

Boss has one in his Ram. If I have to hear about the torque, or the ridiculously amazing mileage he gets anymore, I may vomit....

It’s an Italian boat motor that GM started to develop and then dropped it in the aught when they went bankrupt. Fiat Chrysler picked it back up and finished it.

Hahaha I know a few people like that lol, a friend of mine, who also has a TDI does the same thing, like man all that torque, I’m always like dude I know, I get it, I have one too .. lol

Yep. It’s the same problem with a Cummins powered Ram. Sure, the engine will last a million miles, but the rest of the truck ...

But then you have to watch the fast lane car and thats a terrible thing to do.

My old boss has one (and GTI), she absolutely loves it. Road trips all of the time and only says positive things.

Have much want for the WK2 ECD, but that reliability bugs me. I have been eyeballing that truck since the diesel was announced, and still have not crossed it off my list. However, the Jaguar F-Pace is about the same price (new) and has much better reliability ratings (who’da thunk?). The F-pace will apparently also get a diesel as the base engine. The problem with the Pace is that it is new, so no ‘used’ for a couple of years. Also, no off-road chops to speak of.

Especially when you put a dodge automatic transmission behind that Cummins.

Yep. They really should’ve made their transmissions from something more durable than papier-mâché and peanut butter.
